As the urinary bladder fills, the epithelial layer unfolds and expands to hold the volume of urine introduced into it. Typically associated with secretion or absorption. Transitional or uroepithelial cells appear only in the urinary system, primarily in the bladder and ureter. These cells are arranged in a stratified layer, but they have the capability of appearing to pile up on top of each other in a relaxed, empty bladder, as illustrated in Figure 14.

Columnar epithelial cells are taller than they are wide: This comment form is under antispam protection.

Transitional Epithelium

A ciliated pseudostratified columnar epithelium with goblet cells is a characteristic feature of parts of the respiratory system, where it is call respiratory epithelium. These cells absorb material from the lumen of the digestive tract and prepare it for entry into the body through the circulatory and lymphatic systems.

Transitional epithelium is found exclusively in the excretory urinary passages the renal calyces and pelvis, the ureter, the urinary bladder, and part of the urethra.

Tissues, Part 2 - Epithelial Tissue: Crash Course A&P #3

Smaller bodied animals have a relatively large surface area compared to a much larger animal. While three layers of muscle fibers contribute towards the distention and contraction of the organ, the transitional epithelium is also crucial. Image shows a cross section of a bladder wall, with flattened superficial cells in the transitional epithelium.

The basal cell layer is followed by layers of cells with polyhedral outlines.

14.2 Animal Primary Tissues

Capillaries and small vessels are visible in the connective tissue beneath the epithelium. A single surface is usually not lined by several types of epithelia. A stratified epithelium is composed of two or more cell layers.

The ears of most vertebrate animals contain this cartilage as do portions of the larynx, or voice box.

The goblet cells contain mucous that traps irritants, which in the case of the trachea keep these irritants from getting into the lungs. The nuclei of the epithelial cells are often flattened or ovoid, i.

Fever results in an increase in the destruction of the invading bacteria by increasing the effectiveness of body defenses and an inhibiting bacterial metabolism.

Unit 4: The shape of the surface cells and the number of rows change if the bladder is distended.
